Dia De los Muertos

The show’s title takes off from the more festive Mexican ve...rsion of our own Todos Los Santos (which is mistranslated in the vernacular as Araw ng mga Patay or as Undas).

... Their persistence in being represented in the arts or in every platform of representation in our visual culture seem symptomatic of our fascination for and for our grasping for our fleeting mortality, hence being more than symbols of death, skulls also signify the preciousness of life that we all have to hold on to as dear and celebrate it for the fullness achieved in living it.

Of this existentialist exercise of pondering upon the calcic armature that supports the drapery of flesh and tissue which has been made as a yearly ritual/feast , does it ere yonder reveal our precarious hold on our mortality? We celebrate, we gorge on the deluge of tenuous emotions of sorrow and merriment, but tis the vanity or is it not we just prolong the eventuality of our inescapable end. The themes we like to portray in the pictures we like to hang on our walls seem to bespeak of such. We ponder and wonder but it’s both a miracle and an abomination. Alas, these are portraits of our very frail shells. We fill them up instead with the spirit of infinite jest.

A hundred cast resin skulls lined up on a shelf each customized by various artists as diverse as their age, cosmological outlook and style flesh out this philosophical point aside from the numerous drawings, paintings, prints and other sculptural works to complement the aforementioned custom skulls.

Opening, June 17 2011 @ the Cultural Center of the Philippines

*Kabilang sa pagdiriwang ng ika-150 kaarawan ni Rizal, ang grupo ng mga graffiti artists, na kilala sa pangalang Pilipinas Street Plan, ay nakiisa at nakibahagi gamit ang kanilang interpretasyon ng temang "Ang Gig ni Rizal". Ipinakita nila ito sa pamamagitan ng pagpinta ng kani-kanilang istilo tungkol sa mga iba’t-ibang makabuluhang pangyayari sa buhay ng ating pambansang bayani.

(L-R) Si Nemo Aguila ay gumawa ng isang karakter na sinisimbolo ang mga kalupitan ng paglaban ni Rizal para sa kalayaan ng ating bayan. Ang modernong rakista na Rizal at robot ay ginawa naman ni Epjay Pacheco at Tripp63 bilang simbolo ng modernong lipunan na syang pinangarap ni Rizal at ng ating mga kabataan ngayon. Si Ver at Whoop naman ay naisipan gumawa ng gamu-gamo at lampara mula sa kwento ng ina ni Pepe. Modernong Maria Clara naman ang kay Tawnie habang si O Sei San, isa sa mga babaeng haponesa na minahal ni Rizal, ang ipininta ni KooKoo Ramos. Ang binatang si Rizal naman ay nilikha ni Ungga habang si Egg Fiasco naman ay ginawa ang mga karakter sa isa sa mga sinulat ni Rizal noong bata pa sya na Ang Pagong at ang Matsing. Si Mark Salvatus ang syang lumikha ng mga makamasang salita na kanyang isinama sa kanyang karakter. At ang huli ay ang imahe ng ating pambansang bayani na nililingon ang kanyang nakaraan na hango na rin sa kanyang kasabihan na ang hindi lumingon sa pinanggalingan ay di makakarating sa paroroonan.

c_rafts examines personal stories, collective memories and survival in times of calamity. Salvatus, who used to live in España in the Sampaloc area, departs from his encounters and experiences of Manila floods. Focusing on the ravage of typhoon Ondoy that hit Metro Manila in 2009, it probes the ties between the public and the private, survival and threat, game and play. Rafts made out ...of everyday objects make the viewer re-think perceptions on fear and doubt in relation to the instinct of surviving a disaster. Through these objects, multiple layers of relations and functions are crafted and constructed, further exploring the idea of consumerism, security, urbanism and everyday politics.

Mark Salvatus (b. 1980) graduated Cum Laude from the University of Santo Tomas with a degree in Fine Arts major in advertising. He works across disciplines and various media that deal with community, urbanism, accidental encounters and everyday cultures. Winner of the 2010 Ateneo Art Awards, he is the recipient of the residency grants from Common Room Networks Foundation, La Trobe University Visual Arts Center and the New York Art Project (Art Omi). His recent exhibitions include “Stories of Dreams and Realities” at Rossi & Rossi (London), “Vernacular Cultures & Contemporary Art in Australia, India and the Philippines” at La Trobe University Museum of Art, LUMA (Melbourne), “Boat and Bridge_Net” at Space Beam (Incheon) and “Open House” at the 3rd Singapore Biennale.

CHAOS AND COLOR

This is the place where nightmares and princesses dance together.

In Nemo Aguila’s first one-man exhibition MANSTERS AND PHONY TALES, he decides to delve inside
the play zone of his own unconscious, drawing out colorful creatures that have influenced both his past
and present life as an artist, and more importantly, as a child.

Or if you look at them, perhaps, an amusing combination of both.

Within his recent collection of works, the artist transforms characters encountered during his childhood
into gruesome things that grew an extra pair of eyes or sharpened teeth, images which are much closer
to the graffiti characters that he had been painting and marking on walls for years now. Nemo comically
describes them as “Snow White meets Freddie Krueger” or “Batibot gone wrong” instances. This may be
a simple symbolism for the bridging of two timelines in his life, of innocence and the slow destruction
of it, and basically the realization that as we grow older, these fairy tales, as we knew them, are nothing
but timeless, classic tales bastardized by Disney and the deception of worldwide consumerism.

But it’s not at all this dark. The artist focuses mainly on the humorous, lighter side of it. He makes fun
of its absurdity by vandalizing these faces and forms the same as he does with walls and other objects
that needs to grow a little life and excitement. From these juxtapositions of multicolored monsters,
Nemo explains that he is only exaggerating unusual facial expressions such as the opening of the mouth
because of its rather strange and uncommon nature. He also includes famous graffiti characters of his
fellow artists in his works to pay tribute to the raw culture of street art in the Philippines.

The artist also expounds that the inclusion of popular Filipino brands in his paintings is another way

street foods and one-peso packed peanuts. This may be because as an artist, Nemo worships the
language of the streets, and effortlessly mirrors it through his art in a complete atmosphere of chaos,
wit and color.

Street Category: Graffiti Competition

All competitions will happen at the adidas all24 event in Eastwood on May 14-15, 2011.

The graffiti competition is scheduled on May 15, at 12mn-8pm.

Mechanics:

The competition is open to 14-25 year olds, male or female.

An individual or team of 2-4 artists may enter competition. Team can be all male or all
female, or a mix of both.

Artworks must revolve around the theme: Passion- The Things that Excite Me the Most.

Designs must incorporate adidas logos.

Artworks must be original, not previously released, or used by any other entity.

A maximum of 2 designs may be submitted per individual or team.

Designs may be in electronic format or hand-drawn (and scanned) and must be doable
on actual panel. Designs must be rendered in actual colors and submitted via email.

Deadline of entries is on May 1, 2011.

By May 2, top 4 finalists will be chosen. Finalists will be notified through a phone call.

The top 4 designs will be rendered on 8x12ft panels during the on-the-spot graffiti
competition at the event. Finalists will bring their own materials, limited to spray paint
only. Stencils may also be used.

Winners are determined by a panel of distinguished judges.

The panel of judges’ decision is final.

Grand prize winner will get an all24 Gift Pack and a cash prize of P10,000.
